December History Hour

Founded by Historic Athens in 2019, the Athens Places in Peril initiative works to encourage, develop, and guide ongoing grassroots preservation efforts in the Athens-Clarke County area. Every year our organization calls on the community for nominations to create our annual list of historic sites in danger of demolition, neglect, lack of maintenance, inappropriate development or insensitive public policy. Eligible sites must be 50 years or older, look largely as they did originally, face a current threat to their existence or integrity, and have active grassroots support for preserving the structure. Nominees may include (but are not limited to) historic homes, buildings, structures, cultural landscapes, and cemeteries. At this month’s History Hour, we’ll announce the 2026 inductees and provide important updates on previous years’ sites.

History Hour is a free monthly education program part of Historic Athens One Story. Each month’s History Hour is at the Lyndon House Arts Center, every 1st Tuesday of the month. Complimentary lunch from Rashe’s Cuisine is provided on a first come, first serve basis with vegan options available. This event is free and open to all- see you there!
